One of the many spontaneous shrines that have sprung up in the area, the fence of St. Paul's Chapel is completely covered with t-shirts, caps, notes, mementos, flags, plastic leis, bouquets. It is one block east of ground zero. Built in 1766, St. Paul's is the oldest public building in continuous use on Manhattan Island and the only remaining colonial church. George Washington walked to St. Paul's after his inauguration in 1789.
